Welcome to Nursery

Who are we?

We are 3 and 4 year old pupils joining Coquet Park First School for the first time. We attend Nursery every morning from 8.45 – 11.40. We have our own entrance and playground.

 Who looks after us?

Mrs Turner, the class teacher, welcomes the children into class. Miss Richardson is the Teaching Assistant. They work together to develop our learning.

What do we do?

Mrs Turner plans all of our activities around the Early Years Foundation Stage Profile.  There are seven areas of learning for Early Years:

  • Personal Social and Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding of the World
  • Expressive Arts.

Nursery activities are planned with 30-50 months objectives in mind, but as the year progresses, elements of 40-60 months objectives are included.

We have plenty of time during the morning to choose our own activities such as  sand, water, role play, construction, practical maths opportunities, creative area and mark making .  We often work in small groups in the classroom and outdoor area.

During the morning we share a story while enjoying fruit and milk in a small group. We also divide into Lions and  Tigers for more directed activities - such as phonics, numbers, and fine motor skills.

At Nursery we make lots of new friends and have fun enjoying exciting and interesting activities both indoors and outside.

Every Tuesday,  Ms Pearcy and Miss Richardson take a small group of nursery children to our woodland area for Forest School.  The children always look forward to their Forest School session where they learn  all about the natural environment and enjoy making woodland crafts.

During the year, we enjoy visits in the local area including to The Jam Jar Cinema in Whitley Bay and the whole school Beach Day.

Percy the Park Keeper

We have been reading Percy the park keeper stories and have transformed the outdoor area into Percy's park.  There are lots of jobs for Percy to do and the children are enjoying looking after all the animals, keeping the park clean and tidy and doing some planting.

Autumn

Autumn has arrived and the children have been looking very closely at our Autumn table.  They love using the magnifiers and were very interested when we cut open some of our Autumn fruits and vegetables.  We have also been having lots of fun with conkers - rolling them down the ramps and having conker races!

Making friends and having fun

The children are getting used to the rules and routines in nursery and enjoy all the different areas and activities available. Everyone  gets to play inside and outside every day and we are learning how to take turns and share our resources.  If someone has a toy we would like to play with, we have been learning to say "Please can I have that after you?"

All About Me

Our topic this half term is All About Me and we have been getting to know each other and making friends.  We have been drawing self portraits and remembering that in Nursery we need to have friendly faces and kind hands.  To practise being kind we have had a baby clinic in our role play area outside and we have been playing with the dolls very gently.  We learned how to weigh and measure our babies to make sure they were growing and we enjoyed taking them for walks in the Autumn sunshine.

Settling in

Nursery are settling in brilliantly and are having a lovely time exploring all the areas in Nursery.  We like playing inside and outside and are enjoying making new friends and learning the new routines.
